October 15, 2006 The city of Las Vegas' newly remodeled Chuck Minker Sports Complex offers a variety of low-cost sports and fitness options.
Minker regularly offers basketball league play for adults and over-30 adults; coed racquetball leagues; volleyball leagues for men and women; yoga and group fitness classes; and shotokan and tae kwon do martial arts classes for ages 5 to adult. The center is located at 275 North Mojave Road, at the southwest corner of East Stewart Avenue and Mojave Road. The Minker complex includes a full gymnasium, seven racquetball/wallyball courts, group fitness/dance studio, cardio/weight room, outdoor walk/jog path, lockers, showers and dry saunas. The ample parking lot is monitored by a security guard. The recent renovation provided a remodeled reception area and fitness center, as well as new paint, lighting and flooring throughout the facility. Flat screen televisions line the new cardio/weight room area, with the technology in place to allow those with personal receivers to tune in each station. The center is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The daily fee for non-members to use fitness facilities and attend group fitness classes is $3. Fitness facilities include stationary upright and recumbent bicycles, treadmills, elliptical trainer, upper body Ergo-meter, free weights, blood pressure check, dry sauna, showers and lockers. Annual open gym membership, which includes unlimited open gym play when available, costs $3 per person (minimum age 8 years). Registrants ages 8 to 17 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian accompany them to register on their first visit. A GET FIT membership pass (for ages 14 to 49 years) costs $20 per month and includes use of the open gym, cardio and weight equipment, unlimited group fitness classes and racquetball court use. Seniors age 50 and older may purchase a Platinum membership for $12 per month with the same benefits. Non-member racquetball court use costs $7 per hour. Racquetball courts may be reserved in advance by calling the center. Racquetball tournaments are offered several times a year.
