October 29, 2007 They say it takes three years to build a team when a new coach comes around. Well its year three and there hasn’t been any change in the Rebel football program. Shoot Ty Willingham was winning games when he was at Norte Dame and he got fired.
Being an alumnus of UNLV this is very disappointing. The Rebels have plenty of talent on their roster are getting beat by teams with less talent and better execution is inexcusable. Maybe its time for Mike Sanford to take a lesser role in coaching because it just isn’t working with the top job. UNLV needs a change bad. When John Robinson came to UNLV he gave the program hope. They would win at least 5 games and have great talent. It seems all the work he did has been pushed out the door in the past three seasons. Robinson took this team to a bowl game and never lost a cannon game. I’m sure fans would be happy if we won a game as long as it was against UNR. I call it a positive season if we keep the cannon and win at least one game in conference against a good team like BYU or TCU. Its time for a change, and that time is now. Yeah sure you cant fire a coach in the middle of the season but this might be that time he needs to say I'm stepping down or they need to go in a different direction effective ASAP. The losses this season have been due to questionable coaching. I’m not here to say I can do a better job. I have no clue about coaching I know it’s a tough job but clearly you can see after this season where the problem lies. In the Wisconsin game UNLV goes for it on fourth down when they could have taken a field goal to go up 10-0. Instead they get stopped and lose the game. Against UNR a bad play call and miscommunication gave the ball back to UNR and they game. Not to mention the bad penalties. This is all attributed to coaching and Mike Sanford just isn’t the guy. He’s a great person but he just doesn’t fit in as the head guy. There are plenty of great coaches who can recruit and win games on the market that UNLV should get to turn the program around. Even if they brought John Robinson back I'm sure the fans would love to see that. Mike Hamrick needs to make a decision on what to do about this football program before it looks like something out of the movie WATERBOY with no fans besides parents and coaches. We got the basketball team on the map its time to get the football program going again like we know we can. -Mike Sims
