UNLV Volleyball improves to 12-3

The UNLV volleyball team improved to 12-3 overall and 3-2 in Mountain West Conference play with their quick 3-0 sweep of the Wyoming Cowgirls (6-8, 1-5 MWC) on Thursday night in the Cox Pavilion.  The Rebels have now won seven matches this season by a 3-0 margin and won tonight’s by scores of 30-26, 30-17, 30-13.

The Rebels notched their best hitting night of the season with a .351 output.  The team tallied 52 kills in 114 attempts with a season-low 12 errors.  The team improved upon its hitting in all three games as they began with a .226 percentage (18-6-53) and upped it each frame.  They bumped it to .433 (16-3-30) in the second and maxed out at .484 (18-3-31) in the third. 

Wyoming’s hitting went south from the get-go.  The Cowgirls opened up with a .183 (19-8-60) in game one, but dropped to .114 (13-8-44) in the second.  They fell to .000 (7-7-31) in the third.

UNLV was led offensively by double-digit kill performances by Jessica Walters and Lauren Miramontes, as they tallied 13 and 11 kills, respectively.  Both of them racked up great hitting figures with Walters cranking .476 to Miramontes’ .526.

Erin Greenwood and Maria Aladjova came close to 10 kills, but fell just short. Greenwood had nine, while Aladjova had eight.

Melody Nua had a match-high assists with 41, while Alyssa Erickson pitched in four.

Jada Walker was tops in the match with 26 digs.

The Rebels played nearly every able body in the match.  In all, 15 players from the home squad saw action.

The Cowgirls were led by Angie Hellbaum’s 11 kills and nine digs.  Tasha Weishahn had a team-high 30 assists.

The Rebels return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, with a 7:00 pm contest against the Air Force Falcons.
