September 2007 Athlete of the Month

Devonte Christopher

Which sport do you play? Football

What school do you attend?
Canyon Springs High School

How long have you competed and what motivated you to get involved in your sport?  I’ve been playing football since I was Seven…and my main motivation when I started was to get to college, because my mom always said I have to go, but know my soul motivation is my younger siblings and my younger cousins who truly look up to me.

What do you like most about your sport? I just love the physical aspect of the game the hitting, blocking and even kicking its all fun. The mental part of the game is great making reads, looking off safeties, and making the second level throws.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV and why? It would have to football, because I look at the game in a whole different way now. Instead of it just being entertainment, when I watch football now and I see it’s a pass I instantly start reading the corners and defensive backs as if I’m in the game.

Who is your favorite athlete or person you draw inspiration from? Why do you draw inspiration from this person? I don’t really get inspiration from an athlete; my inspiration comes from people who I deal with everyday. My mom and dad would have to be my greatest inspirations, they just all around great parents. My Uncle Darnell would have to be my number one everything, because he’s like a father to me.

Do you think that being an athlete helps or hinders you with your academic studies?
I’m not going to even lie in some classes it helps you and in others it hinders you. Sometimes you have some teachers who understand how much you do daily and love sports. Then in others they can care less what you do outside their class. (GPA is 3.7 un-weighted and 4.0 weighted)

What is the biggest challenge for a student/athlete? The biggest challenge of being a student athlete is being a model student in and out of class. Being a student/athlete, there’s this target on you and everyone knows who you are teachers and administration expect you to act a certain way if nobody else does. So the challenge comes from you being more of a student than an athlete.

Do you plan on pursuing your sport at the college level? Absolutely, I plan on getting a degree and playing college football.

Please list any accomplishments you are proud of achieving in your sport: My most proud accomplishment was being voted one of the captains on my football team. Also in leading the state in passing and throwing the most touchdowns in the history of Nevada.
