August 23rd, 2007 If you have been out to the FIBA Americas Championship you might see some familiar faces from the old Rebel family.
One face you might notice is former Arkansas and UNLV rival Nolan Richardson. Richardson is coaching team Mexico in this year FIBA games. He took over a struggling Mexican team that needed a lot of help and guidance. He has taken this team of talent and guided them to an undefeated record so far in there schedule this year. One player that is blossoming under Richardson guidance is for Rebel swing man Romel Beck. Beck has been lighting up the floor with his new coach on his side. Beck a fan favorite with the Rebels in 2003-2004 had to deal with a lot during his college days. Beck first was recruited by Charlie Spoonhour and then played for his son Jay who took over when his dad resigns. Then another coaching change that brought Lon Kruger in and things spilled out of control. Beck and Kruger didn’t see eye to eye and it showed in his performance. Since exiting UNLV Beck has bounced around from league to league trying to make a contribution and sticking somewhere. After leaving UNLV he was drafted into the NBA developmental league but opted to play over seas. This past season was his best playing for Venezuela. Beck started all games and averaged 12 points per-game. He has been on the Mexican National team since leaving college in the spring of 04. Beck who was born in Mexico but grew up in Rancho Cucamonga California was discovered by NBA forward Eduardo Najera a fellow Mexican teammate. Beck enjoys his time with the team and is helping them into a successful situation. He like playing for Richardson someone who coaches the style of ball beck plays in the run and shoot game. Beck is back on his old ground this week and looks to help his fellow countrymen to a spot in the 2008 Olympics. Mexico dominated Puerto Rico 100-89 in their first FIBA game last night. Beck was 5 for 8 from the field with 11 points. Mexico was not expected to win this game which means there could be a little surprise in store for all the team that have to play them.
