IS HOPE LOST FOR PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM?
August 13, 2007
by Mike Sims
For many years now all we have heard about is Las Vegas will be getting a professional sport team in the very near future? Most of those hopes have been dashed in recent weeks with the NBA referee scandal.

What commissioner in their right mind would let a pro team in our city with all the gambling and access to polluting their sport? Not one that currently hold office.

Las Vegans who were so desperately wanting that pro team you dreams we dashed when good old Tim Doughty decided to bet on NBA games while being employed as a referee.

I love our Mayor and I thank him for trying to get us a team but with this in the sports world it’s going to cause a huge problem for our city to get a team. The All Star game was crazy and all kinds of things went wrong but that could have been fixed. Professional referees betting on games just can’t be denied.

Sure the NBA says they are going to tighten up on the refs and that this will not happen again, but isn’t this the same organization that was suppose to have the strictest policy in sports for gambling.

So here is my question what are they going to do if Vegas gets a team and they are strolling through the sports book and there is a game up for the following night at that city they will be refereeing in?

How do you really monitor that? Does anyone know… Is there going to be pictures up in all sports books with head shot of each NBA ref? I highly doubt it.

Who to say that this won’t happen in other sports. Those refs are not nearly paid as well as NBA refs. Sure it isn’t NBA type of money but they don’t have to have other jobs like the NFL guys.

It amazes me that one incident like this took all the hope out of my sail and probably every normal sports fan that lives in this town and had any hope of getting a pro team here. I guess it’s on with the Wranglers and 51’s.

This situation is funny to me because I always wanted to know how they would stop a ref from gambling on a game. One he doesn’t make as much as the players, two he would be helping himself and not any one team. The situation was over looked in trying to keep just athletes inline and not the rest of the people involved in the organization.

It pains me to think that this one situation has caused all hope in the city that has so longed for a team.
