UNLV men's basketball head coach Lon Kruger was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and is recovering at home after last week's surgery.

Kruger underwent successful open-heart sextuple bypass surgery on Thursday, which was performed by Dr. V.C. Smith, Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Rose Siena Hospital. Cardiologist Dr. Matt McMahon identified abnormalities early and referred Kruger to Dr. Smith for surgery.

"Dr. Smith and Dr. McMahon were fantastic," Kruger said. "The surgery was very successful. I would also like to thank everyone who has called with their well wishes. They are all much appreciated. I look forward to being back to full speed at the appropriate time."

Kruger is expected to be back to his normal schedule within the next four-to-six weeks.

UNLV'S KRUGER HAS SUCCESSFUL SURGERY

UNLV men's basketball head coach Lon Kruger underwent a successful heart procedure at a Las Vegas-area hospital Thursday afternoon and is resting comfortably in recovery.

The 54-year-old Kruger had his routine annual stress test last week and after doctors conducted further testing earlier this week, blockages were identified and the determination was made to do open-heart bypass surgery. Doctors performed six bypasses during the four-hour surgery.

It is anticipated that he could be released early next week to return home for recovery. Kruger fully anticipates being back at work and with the team prior to the season beginning.

"I would like to thank everyone for their concern and support," said his wife, Barb Kruger. "The surgery was very successful, Lon is doing well and we are looking forward to his full recovery."

The UNLV Athletics Department requests that all cards and well wishes be sent to the UNLV men's basketball office and that the coach's privacy is respected during this recovery period.
