Vegas Summer League
July 16, 2007
by Mike Sims
It’s shaping up to be a really hot summer in Vegas weather wise and Sports wise as well. If you don’t know what I'm talking about then you have been missing out on some hot NBA action and a lot of local talent that has been on the court in the NBA Vegas summer league.

Not only is the best young talent in the NBA down there you can also see some of our former local players getting a shot at making the BIG SHOW.  Former Rebels Kevin Kruger and Joel Anthony both signed to play for Orlando and Miami respectively. Kruger started off hot going 7-12 from 3-point land in his first few games. Anthony not playing as good as Kruger but his defense has showed up recording seven blocks in one game.

Rebel fan favorite Louis Amundson played in four games for the Philadelphia 76ers averaging almost 10 point a game. Amundson signed a contract late in the season with Philly and played out the rest of the regular season with them and looks to make it back with them next season.

Also a few others local guys are getting a shot like former Gorman point guard C.J. Watson. Watson playing solid basketball for the world champion Spurs. Watson has been playing basketball overseas since graduating from Tennessee. Also for Rebel guard Terrence Green has a roster spot with Portland but didn’t see to many minutes.

Also former Cimarron and Rebel guard Marcus Banks played in one game for Phoenix and dropped 42-points. Banks got the big contract a year ago and has seen some minutes behind two-time MVP Steve Nash. Banks name has come up in many trade talks over the summer due to his big contract and limited minutes. Banks could be on the move to a team who needs a point guard.

The Summer League finished up this past Sunday with the Knicks going 5-0 and their young guard Nate Robinson taking home MVP honors. Kevin Durant dropped 32 points in his final Vegas game in a loss to Portland. Durant was the second pick overall in the NBA Draft in June.

If you missed out on the Vegas Summer league don’t worry many of the pros will be back in town later in August for the FIBA world championships. Team USA and all its big stars will be in the Olympic Qualifier. Also a familiar face will show up in the Mexican National team. Former Rebel Romel Beck. Beck has been playing in Venezuela for the past two years and part of the Mexican National team since leaving UNLV
