City Launches Mayor’s Health Initiative To Encourage Residents To Get In Shape

May 7, 2007
The city of Las Vegas is launching a health initiative to encourage the community to get in shape. Residents are invited to join Mayor Oscar B. Goodman in his quest to increase the livability of our great city by becoming a healthy and active community. The mayor encourages everyone to learn about the importance of diet and exercise and to take advantage of the many recreational opportunities offered by the city.

The official kick off to the Mayor's Healthy Lifestyle Initiative begins with the Get Movin' with Mayor Oscar B. Goodman walk on Saturday, May 19, at 8 a.m. at the Charlie Kellogg and Joe Zaher Sports Complex located at 7901 W. Washington Avenue. Participants can start their day with a walk and stay for a fun day in the park at the Las Vegas Sports Fest II.

“Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in this country and I have taken an active role in encouraging the public to get in shape,” Mayor Goodman said. “The Mayor’s Healthy Lifestyle Initiative is a way to get the community to eat right and stay healthy.”

Currently, Las Vegas ranks 42 in the Sperling Report's "Healthiest Cities" in which to live. Mayor Goodman is committed to increasing the livability of our great city, so that Las Vegas is recognized not only as one of the best places to visit, but, more importantly, as one of the greatest places in which to live.

The Mayor's Healthy Lifestyle Initiative, which can be found along with other healthy tips at www.gethealthylasvegas.org, consists of a three-point plan.

Get Smart: Diet and nutrition are essential components to a healthy lifestyle and quality of life. Educate our citizens about proper diets.

Get Up: Sedentary activities increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity. Educate the citizenry on importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Get Out: The mayor and City Council are supportive of parks and recreation amenities and are committed to providing quality facilities in the city of Las Vegas. Identify recreation center, parks and trails near you.

The city of Las Vegas has many leisure services facilities that offer a wide range of activities, from cultural performances, sports leagues, and children’s day camps to Corporate Challenge, the largest amateur athletic competition in the state. We encourage you to visit our wonderful facilities, and along the way become healthier and happier.
