March 2007 Athlete of the Month

Ashleigh Shoughro

Which sport do you play? Soccer, football

What position(s) do you play?
Forward (soccer), kicker (football)

What school do you attend?
Palo Verde H.S.

How long have you played and what motivated you to get involved in this sport?  I’ve played soccer since I was 4 years old and was motivated by one of my teachers who encouraged my mom to get me started in soccer.

I kicked for varsity football both fall 2005 and 2006 season. My dad convinced my mom to let me play football (I had been asking since freshman year but she was afraid I’d get hurt). As it turned out I think she enjoyed watching me play more than anyone.

I’ve always loved both sports, but my passion is soccer.

Please list any accomplishments you are proud of achieving in your sport:
I helped lead my team to four regional soccer championships; two back-to-back state championships and scored 50 goals this season. Also, well over 100 goals in my high school career.

I also earned back to back “special teams player of the year” in football with a total of 87 points.
What do you like most about your sport? Both sports require you to be quick and aggressive in addition to being physically fit. I especially like the challenge and find it rewarding to be a part of both.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV and why?
  Of course, soccer and football

Who is your favorite athlete or person you draw inspiration from? Why do you draw inspiration from this person?
Mia Hamm has always been my favorite athlete.   She is so inspiring because she’s such a great soccer player with such devotion and passion for the game.

Do you think that being an athlete helps or hinders you with your academic studies?
I think it can do both. It helps you in the aspect of being motivated to do well. You get rewarded academically in sports when you maintain straight A’s. It can hinder you if you’re not well-focused and organized. Practices and games require a lot of time which takes away from studying. I currently carry a 4.0 GPA and have been for the last two years. Freshman and sophomore I experienced the hinder part.

Do you plan on pursuing your sport at the college level?  I received a soccer scholarship to attend the University of San Diego.

At this time there is no professional level for women in your sport, so what else would you like to do in life?  I will always play soccer at some level and continue to hope for a women’s professional level to start again. I plan to get a degree in psychology and open a practice when I return to Las Vegas.

Do you have a favorite saying?  “To be the best you have the play the best”

What is your favorite food? Mexican

Favorite show on TV?  Court TV

Favorite movie?  “How to Lose a Guy in 10 days”

Any other comments that you think may be necessary for this questionnaire?  I’m very grateful to have been blessed with wonderful talents and parents who have always supported me. I’m honored to have been chosen for this month’s athlete, thank you.
