Record Falls At Trojan Relays

March 3, 2007
UNLV junior thrower Monique Humphries sets record in the hammer.

It was a strong opening performance for UNLV track and field on Saturday at the Trojan Relays as five Rebels finished in the top 10 in the opening meet of the outdoor season at Loker Stadium.

The Rebels were led by Monique Humphries with the junior thrower finishing second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw on the afternoon. It was a strong day for the Rebel throwers, with four of them, including Humphries, coming in the top three.

Humphries came in second in the shot put with a career-best toss of 38’-11.50” and then third in the hammer with a distance of 165’-7.00”, which broke her own career record in the event, which was 159’-6.00”. It is the second career record that Humphries has as she set the mark in the weight throw during indoor track with a distance of 58’-1.00”.

Aja Evans was just a little bit better than Humphries in the shot put, as Evans won the event with a heave of 45’-3.75”, which is the fourth-best mark in Rebel history. Also in the shot put Olivia Raya came in fourth with a distance of 38’-3.50”.

Raya also added a second-place finish in the discus with a distance of 129’-7.00” and a fifth place in the hammer with a mark of 161’-9.00”. Tanesha Carr rounded out the Rebel throwers with a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a distance of 62’-5.00”. Sophomore high jumper Claire Schreiner added a second-place finish in that event, clearing 5’-1.00”.

On the track Meia Tezeno finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64 and then five Rebel relay teams came in to the top five. The 4x100 relay team (47.08) and the distance medley relay team (12:30.65) came in second, while the 4x200 meter relay team (1:39.98), 4x400 meter relay team (3:58.78) and 800 sprint medley team (1:48.57) came in third.

The relays featured 12 squads including the Rebels and host USC, and the women of Troy placed second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2006, as well as winning the NCAA West Regional and placing third at the Pac-10 Championships. Fan can get complete results by going to
