February 15, 2007 Palo Verde High School repeated as the 4A Girls State Champions at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex on Thursday night by defeating Green Valley High School, 2-1. The state matchup was a repeat of last year.
While the almost 1000 people in attendance would agree that Green Valley H.S. dominated most of the game with possession and overall aggression, the final score once again ended in Palo Verde's favor.

The opening half seemed as Green Valley was the far superior team holding the ball on their offensive side of the field more than 70% of the time. It would prove as so early on when Green Valley took the lead in the 20th minute with a goal by #3, Jessie Cahill. With a good through ball Jessie kicked what seemed to be a shot right at the goalie and an easy pick up. But not the case as the ball squeezed right through the goalies grip. With a 1-0 lead and dominating the game it all seemed like this one was in the books. Palo would not give up though and nearing the end of the 1st half they would even the match with what seemed to be just a bit of mayhem from a good distance away to the goal. Out of the mayhem came the ball off the foot of midfielder #4, Elizabeth Null.

The second half was much of the same as Green Valley dominated time of possession but couldn't seem to get off a good shot. In the 60th minute came Green Valley's best chance as team MVP, Ali Schaefer took a penalty kick from about 25 yards out and put it off the top crossbar. It was Palo's team MVP and the LVSM March Athlete of the Month, #11 Ashleigh Shoughro, that would seal the deal for a repeat State Title. In the 75th minute Palo pushed the ball close to the goal putting foot after foot on it and when the ball came Ashleigh's way she cashed in with a toe shot pass the goalie and two defenders. A repeat Championship and a repeat victory over Green Valley HS, but don't count out Green Valley next year as Palo started mostly Seniors and Green Valley started mostly Juniors.
