Wednesday, March 10, 2010 By Isaac Kuhlman Tonight was the World Premiere of the new motion picture "She's Out Of My League" starring Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve. The story is one of a neurotic underachiever (Baruchel) meeting the perfect 10 (Eve) and trying to become confident enough to make his dream girl a reality.
The movie is quite hilarious and has more than enough "guy" humor to dispell the romantic-comedy label that it may fall under. This is a crass, hip, and somewhat inspiring movie that can definitely split a side or two...well, hopefully only one, because a person only has two sides. In the words of Hayes MacArthur one of the movie's most hilarious character's, "It's a Cinderella story with a penis." He goes on to put it in another sports metaphor, "It's like Jay's character is a 15 seed that makes it to the Final Four." Baruchel himself offers this advice for males to come watch the movie, "It's something you can take your chick to, but it's not something you should be embarrased to watch with your friends." In the movie there is a scene where a double date is set up at a Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders playoff game, and Baruchel (a Montreal native) said that watching the game while "getting paid to meet Sidney Crosby...that was like the coolest thing ever." Geoffrey Stults, who plays the pilot ex-boyfriend of Eve's character, said, "This is a movie you can meet chicks at. It will have everyone laughing. Everyone will get laid." He continued to mention a scene where, as he describes, "Without giving anything away, let's just say that Nate Torrence takes the 'bro code' to another level." Torrence plays a very straight-laced married man in the movie, but he is concerned for his friend's well being and tries to help when he can. His advice and nurturing actions deliver huge laughs in the movie. The movie's director, Jim Field Smith, was actually entirely new to the sport of hockey as he is English and knows mostly about the sports of rugby and soccer (football). He said shooting the scenes at the Pen's game was drastically different than shooting on a closed set, and, since it was a playoff game, it was very important not to interfere with the game. He closed by saying for a sure fire bet on this year's World Cup, "England. England all the way. It's gotta happen one year, right?" Believe me when I say, that I watch A LOT of movies each year, and for guys between the ages of 17 and 35, this movie is a guaranteed good time. Girls will definitely enjoy it as well, but this is definitely a great "guy" comedy. On a scale of 1-10. I would give this about an 8.2 for sheer hilarity. |
