Jaime Calvo MPSF Player Of The Week

Monday, November 2, 2009

Las Vegas, NV--UNLV's Jaime Calvo was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday. It is the first weekly MPSF honor of his career, and the fourth for UNLV this season. He shared this week's award with Robbie Gouk from Cal State Bakersfield.

Calvo, a junior defender and native of Visalia, Calif., keyed the Rebels' defensive effort that held conference co-leaders San Jose State and Sacramento State to just one total goal over the weekend. UNLV would post a 1-0-1 record against the two teams, as the Rebels upset SJSU 1-0 on Friday night, handing the Spartans their first home loss also season while breaking the Hornets' seven-game win streak. That was followed by Sunday's 1-1 double-overtime tie with Sacramento State, who had entered the game with a 5-0 league mark. The two opponents were held to just nine total shots on goal, while the win at San Jose State was the first road win for UNLV in conference play since 2004.

The Rebels, who at 7-5-4 have clinched at least a .500 season for the first time since going 12-8 in 2002, will end the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 7, when it faces New Mexico in Albuquerque in a 6 pm (PST) contest.
