July 2006 Athlete of the Month

Nathan Williams

What sport(s) do you play? Road cyclist, inline speed skating, and Cross Country running.

What is your age and how long have you played your sport(s)? Age 14, I started as an inline speed skater about one year ago, cyclist about five months ago, and started running about eight months ago. (I just recently found a coach for running.)

How did you get started in your sport(s)? One of my friends was a speed skater and I thought it was cool, so I joined. Running, we heard about it at Wild Oats Market and came by on a Monday night to run. I had asked my parents for a road bike because I saw Lance Armstrong in the Tour De France and I thought that it would be a cool thing to do, as well.

What do you like most about your sport(s)? I'd say the competition, by pushing myself to the limit to see what I can do and speed - I like going fast.

Do you like to practice your sport(s)? Yes, that is the only way I will improve upon myself is to practice.

Who is your favorite athlete and why? Lance Armstrong because he pushed himself to the limit. He shows that if you’re willing to try your hardest it pays off.

What sport do you like to watch? Cycling, because it gets to be competitive at high and low speeds.

Other than your sport(s) what do you enjoy doing? Just hanging out with my friends and having a good time.

What school do you attend? I just graduated from Cadwallader Middle School and will be attending Centennial High School.

Do you want to pursue your sport(s) in college and why? Yes, because I feel that if I work hard enough I can get a scholarship and, maybe, make it big some day.

Do you want to be a professional athlete? If no, then what do you want to become in life? Yes, I would like to become a professional athlete in either cycling or running.

List any accomplishments you are proud of achieving in your sport(s):
1. Winning my age division in the “Catch the Gobbler” 5K run.
2. Winning my age division in the “Catch the Leprechaun” 5K run
3. Finishing the New Las Vegas Marathon
4. Competing in the Hershey’s Track & Field regional meet
5. Winning 1st place in the Junior Olympic Speed Skating Southwest Region in my first year competing.
6. Winning 2nd place in the advanced division for the Southwest Region in speed skating in my first year competing.

9. Competing in the Sea Otter Classic/Cycling
10. Riding 80 miles in the Tour De Summerlin.
11. Winning the Junior Division and (3) yellow jerseys in the Summit Center Classic in Arizona.
