Tuesday, July 7, 2009 Las Vegas, NV--The Main Event is under way, and even the staff at the WSOP was blown away by the turn out. Day 1-D attracted 2,809 entries. This means the official final count is 6,494 players who have entered the 2009 Main Event. Based on this figure, the 2009 WSOP Main Event now ranks as the third-largest live poker tournament in history. Only the 2006 and 2008 championships drew larger numbers. |

Saturday, July 4, 2009 Las Vegas, NV--The Main Event tournament at the World Series of Poker began with opening festivities. WSOP President and Commissioner opened up the tournament by introducing WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel, who recited customary instructions and rules to all players. Effel also thanked players, fans, and the entire staff at the WSOP. |

Friday, July 3, 2009 By Isaac Kuhlman Tournament creators Don Cheadle and Annie Duke hosted the 3rd annual "Ante Up For Africa" charity poker tournament that got influential members of poker and celebrities together to raise donations for the ENOUGH organization and the International Rescue Committee. Both of the charities concern their efforts with Darfur, Sudan and the genocidal relief that is desperately needed in the region. Since its inception in 2007 the tournament has raised nearly 2.5 million dollars. |
