Mayweather Proves He's Ready For Pacquiao

Saturday, September 19, 2009

By Isaac Kuhlman

If there were any detractors (and there probably aren't) to Floyd Mayweather's abilities to take on and beat any opponent that stands in his way, Saturday night may have put even more doubts to rest. Though, many fight observers believed that Mayweather would win his fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday, there was the lingering thought that maybe 2 years of retirement may lead to a stunning upset. Marquez was a HUGE underdog in the fight, and it didn't help his cause that Mayweather came into the weigh-ins 2 pounds over the 144-lbs. catch weight. The result was convincing, Mayweather stifled and frustrated Marquez all night to take the unanimous decision over Marquez (the man who many people believe beat Manny Pacquiao two times).

Pacquiao himself has a very formiddable foe in Puerto Rican-born Miguel Cotto coming up, and if he wins the fight it could set up for the biggest pay day in his and Mayweather's career with a superfight matchup between Pacquiao and Mayweather. However, it's not even certain if Pacquiao will win or take the fight with Mayweather consequently. Of course, all the promoters and fans would pay a record amount of money to see the fight.

Oliver McCall Dusted Off Cobwebs To Get Win

Friday, August 21, 2009

By Isaac Kuhlman

Oliver "The Atomic Bull" McCall was a pretty well-known boxer in the early-to-mid 90's. However, the aging and rapidly fading former WBC Champion (by way of KO'ing Lennox Lewis in 1994) is merely just a name some of us remember now. At 44-years old, boxing becomes a very difficult sport to stay in the mix of, and the more championship rounds fought, the worse the fighter is for the wear. McCall is by no means a "tomato can" for up-and-coming fighters to get their records boosted, but McCall is certainly not a top contender anymore, and I doubt he ever will be again. That said, the "old man" went out and surprised everyone by beating Franklin "Yah Yah" Lawrence by a unanimous decision after the 10-round fight went to the scorecards.

Lawrence is a 33-year old fighter and now posts a 12-2-2 record after the loss. He is also not a top contender, but still showed a variety of skills to be pleased with. He hand faster hands then McCall all night, but that's also not saying a whole lot comparatively. Look, I'm not saying Oliver McCall is a bad fighter, nor do I think he is fooling himself by still fighting. I am just saying that with age comes a rapid deterioration of skills, and hand speed and reaction time fall off very quickly. There are a great few exceptions like Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver who seemed to get better after 35, but, for the rest of the world, it's pretty much documented that the skills go away.

Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo wanted to show critics and himself that his loss earlier this year to Kermit Cintron may have just been a bad day. Well, today was a good day. Angulo took on Gabriel "The King" Rosado (12-3, 7 KOs) at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm in ESPN'S Friday Night Fights' Main Event. Angulo looked every bit the rising star that he has been regarded as by boxing critics and fans.
